Chimney crown vs. chimney cap: what each one does

Chimney crowns and chimney caps are essential components, each serving distinct purposes to protect your chimney.

Purpose of a Chimney Crown

A chimney crown is a slab, usually made of concrete, that covers the top of the chimney. Its main purpose is to protect the chimney structure below from weather damage by directing water away from the flue.

A properly constructed crown with an overhanging drip edge will prevent rain and snow from eroding the mortar joints and brickwork of your chimney, which can lead to costly repairs over time.

Function of a Chimney Cap

The chimney cap is a metal covering fitted on top of the chimney crown. It serves multiple purposes: keeping rain, snow, and debris out of the flue, preventing downdrafts, and stopping animals from entering the chimney.

A chimney cap often includes a mesh screen, which acts as a spark arrestor, preventing sparks from exiting and causing roof fires, while also keeping pests like birds and squirrels out.

Maintenance and Inspection

Both the chimney crown and cap require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure they are not damaged. Cracks in the crown or a damaged cap can allow moisture to penetrate, leading to further issues.

Regular checks and professional services can help maintain the structural integrity of both components, ultimately avoiding expensive repairs and ensuring the longevity of your chimney system.
